Introducing Burke & Best

Hi there! How are you? How are the kids? Did you enjoy that holiday in Pevensey? It's been too long huh? Yes, an update is long overdue.

Way back in 2014 things were crazy. Although gigantically successful, it's fair to say that the production and release of Red Bull Kart Fighter 3 had been almost broken us and then we made life even-more complicated for ourselves by undertaking a fairly ambitious self-funded free to play game - Stunt Guy 2.0.

Over the following 12 months we then went on to: create a universe around it (The Magnificent Stunts) including comics, and TV screenplays, we applied and filmed for Dragons' Den, produced and released two more games in the series and dealt with the fall-out of the showing of Dragons' Den.

By January 2015 we were knackered so - obviously - we: Undertook a brilliant but ambitious HTML5 game project for The Transform Trust & Nationwide, started work on another game in the series (Stunt Wheels) and simultaneously tried to raise some investment to continue the project.

Gladly, somehow, all these things were a success! Stunt Wheels was a hit on the App Store and in May 2016 we launched a brand-new games studio in the heart of Kent.

This new studio 'Burke and Best' takes everything that was awesome about Kempt: the skills, the experience, the ideas* and adds-in three magical new ingredients: funding - through the generous support of the SUCCESS fund, backing - from some very good friends in the industry and a much larger team! We’re confident that world domination is now assured.

I’m glad to say that the first year of B&B has been a tremendous success. We've been working with some of the biggest names in the industry and are about to soft-launch our debut title: a sumptuous free to play mobile game for a major US media brand - it’s sure to be a massive hit so I look forward to sharing that with you soon.

Kempt is now focussed on the maintenance and exploitation of its IP/ technology, please do contact us if you'd like to discuss either.

Kempt - Also Available in HTML5

We often get asked what we think of HTML 5 - a strange question - like any tool HTML5 is great if it's selected for the right job. I guess we get asked because we used to be known for our Flash games, HTML5 is the expected replacement and yet we've appeared to be more focussed on high-end mobile app-games. However, between these major releases we have managed to get a few HTML5 games done and so we thought it was long-past time to do a bit of a run-down!

Stunt Guy 2.0 - HTML 5 Edition:

At Kempt we don't believe in doing experiments on our client's money or time (unless that's explicitly what they've asked for) so - if there's a new technology or approach we want to try out, we'll often come up with a self-inititiated project through which we can do the required learning. When it came to trying out HTML5 we didn't need to think very hard to come up with a idea. I don't know about you but we're obsessed with retro-games - particularly the cheap LCD ones you used to get in corner shops back in the late 80s - so, we decided to build our own one!

Red Bull Focus - Test Games


This one is really interesting - produced as a 5-way partnership project between Kempt, Red Bull, Prime Decision, YNC and Hover - we worked closely with Prime decision to create a suite of games which would be a truly credible and scientific measure of focus without losing the all-important enjoyment of playing - a tough brief but hugely enjoyable to work on and I think the results speak for themselves!

Activia Fruit Fusions - Puzzle Game

This one's hot off the press, released a few weeks ago and produced for Danone with our lovely partners at MEC. It's a simple tile-matching game designed to compliment their above the line activity for the new Fruit Fusion flavours they've just launched. The game runs flawlessly on both desktop and mobile devices and is largely being deployed as a rich media ad campaign via banners on several major networks but you can play it right now at http://danone.kempt.co.uk.

So, there you go! Can Kempt do HTML5? We sure can, how about we do one for you?!


Games, Advertising & Kart Fighter 3 Hits Windows Phone.

The last week or so has been a historic one for the Advertising and Games industries. Obviously the big news is that Red Bull Kart Fighter 3 was released on Windows Phone today (yaaay!) but, interestingly, its release coincides with the massive clang of a giant penny finally dropping in the Advertising industry.

You see, until now, the advertising industry really hasn't understood games at all - let alone how it could use them effectively. The reason for this is fairly simple - Advertising people just don't really play games. It's an industry that tends to attract intelligent, ambitious, sociable and, often, beautiful people who are really far too busy with social engagements and their career to set aside hours to play the latest AAA title. Indeed, even now that the iPhone has become uniform, they don't tend to use it for play - they're far too busy keeping up with their 1000+ Facebook friends, pretending that they get value out of using Twitter and watching out "fail" videos on YouTube.

Anyway... that lack of understanding appears, at last, to be changing. Late last week IAB UK published a report on games which broke the news that a) pretty much everyone plays games and b) most players are quite happy to accept advertising in games in exchange for free content and then the Wall Street Journal waded in with its (apparently unrelated) article "Are Mobile Games The Next Great Ad Medium?".

Obviously this news wasn't much of a surprise to us and it won't be to many of you either but, it's safe to say, that it will come as a surprise to most of the advertising industry. Of particular interest to them will be the revelation that the majority of mobile gamers are in-fact female.

Anyway, how does this relate to Kart Fighter 3? Well, most obviously it's living proof of the fact that games can indeed be used as a hugely effective advertising medium. Over its lifetime it's had millions of installs and engagements which has huge advertising value. However, if that weren't enough, Kart Fighter is not just an advergame any more - it's a full-blown Free 2 Play game which is actively generating revenue for the brand...

Kempt, ahead of the curve? Undoubtedly :)

Then, as revealed by the BBC last Sunday and discussed by our MD - Chris Kempt on Facebook today it looks rather like we'll be hitting the screens of the UK on Dragons Den on Sunday the 17th of August - obviously this was filmed a number of months ago now and we're not able to reveal any details of how it went but as their teaser clip clearly shows we were there to pitch the (now basically finished) Magnificent Stunts project - a series of mobile games starring our mythical stunt family which launched back in May with Stunt Guy 2.0.

So, exciting stuff huh?! Will we get the money? Will Chris manage not to swear on national television? Who knows... but in the meantime:

Stunt Guy 2.0 Launch Update (Facebook)

I'm going to try and document the launch of Stunt Guy 2.0 over the next few days, they've been so many findings already and I'm sure other people will find them useful.

I've just added a news update to our Facebook but the key finding thus far would appear to be that it is totally possible to get into the top 20 without getting any App-Store features at all! Once I work out how... I'll feed back!

*** Update *** The Facebook post below is, in fact, incorrect. One thing I've learnt is that - for some reason - it takes App Annie and App Figures 12-24 hours to pick up on features. Since writing this i'm pleased to say that we picked up the following features:

Best New Games (iPad) - Brazil, China, Japan, Turkey

Needless to say we are super-pleased with this and relieved that we managed to get the Japanese translation done in time - we're looking into getting the other localisations done this week.

As Stunt Guy 2.0 Launches

Well, D-day has arrived, Stunt Guy 2.0 is hitting App-Stores around the world (it should be in the UK in about 15 minutes) and currently things appear to be going reasonably well?!

Comments and reviews are starting to spring up around the web (we'll try and keep these up to date on the Magnificent Stunts site) we've had loads of supportive emails and messages and generally people seem to be being nice about it on twitter too... all good thus far then!

One thing that has occurred today is that - at the last minute - we managed to sort out a launch event - Literally, this was all organised today! Tomorrow from about 10am we're going to be in Canterbury City centre near the Clock Tower - there'll be four reps from Kempt demoing the game and giving away merch and then - at about 4pm Chris Kempt will be doing a real, actual, stunt! Really!

Sometimes, given that not so long ago we used to describe ourselves as a Marketing Agency, we're staggeringly bad at telling people what we're up to. My only defence is that historically our role was about creating amazing marketing assets and not getting people to them... well, that's my excuse!

Stunt Gal - Alpha-Test Results

The results are in! After 3 weeks of rigorous testing we have the first verdict on our forthcoming Stunt Gal game - huge thanks go to everyone that helped out by testing it and feeding back. The team will go through the feedback over the next couple of weeks and we'll be sure to report back on any changes or updates.

Kart Fighter 3 Races Back Up the Charts

Last week saw another milestone on the epic journey that is Red Bull Kart Fighter with the release of KF3 1.1 - a significant content update which featured a new location (Forge Ahead - a fantastical steel mill set in the icy tundra) as well as new Kart Skins, usability enhancements and the odd bug-fix.

Gladly this release appears to have been received rather well as now being featured heavily around the App Store (including "Best New Game" thanks Apple!) and it's quickly climbing the charts again. The release version got into the top ten overall in most countries worldwide so it'd be awesome to see this update do even better. Dare we dream of the top spot?!

Stunt Guy Hits Blackberry & Android!

The last couple of weeks have been touch busy at Kempt HQ particularly with the the Stunt Guy project which saw two massive steps in its evolution: First we had the with the release of V1.3 (which we feel is probably the definitive release) as updates for the existing Android and iOS apps. However - excitingly - Stunt Guy 1.3 is also now out on Blackberry too!

Red bull Kart Fighter 3, Launch - Boom!


Well, after 8 months of back breaking - well, finger-breaking - work from the team, Kart Fighter 3 is finally out in the wild.

It's hard to describe the feeling you inevitably get at the end of a project like this - it's a weird mixture of pride, relief and anticipation but with a strange undercurrent of total mental exhaustion. The funny thing is that you're so focused on the end goal of finishing the damn thing that you totally forget all the work that happens after you launch - checking the app-store, hustling for reviews, telling important contacts, chasing down irritating little bugs and, of course, writing posts like this one.

If I could offer any advice to would-be developers or clients it would be this: At the end of a project like this make sure you make time to access what you've achieve, pat yourselves on the back a bit and, most importantly, allow the team to recuperate a little before pushing on. Perhaps send them to the Bahamas for a while? About a year would be perfect :o)

Anyway... gladly... Red Bull Kart Fighter 3 Appears to be a mahooosive success, whooohooo!

The game launched in the App-store on the 18th (yesterday) and already it's rocketed up the chart. Within about 24 hours it was the #1 racing game in most territories worldwide and right now it's sitting at #20 in the overall chart in the UK which is fricking amazing. The full marketing campaign starts on the 25th next week so goodness knows what'll happen then!

Okay... change of plan...

Hi There - Chris here - sorry it's been so long since we've been in touch, it's long past time for me to explain.

At the end of last year / beginning of this year things at Kempt HQ went totally mental. We had a series of technical issues - mostly relating to our switch from PC to Mac (and our existing infrastructure not playing ball), massive illness in the team - everyone was out for the count several times - and also several of our commercial projects (which pay the bills at the end of the day) massively over-ran.

Nevertheless we did plough on with Bar Fight. We tried the first prototype, but neither of us (you or us) felt it was good enough so we tried some other simple prototypes in Flash which - frankly - weren't good enough either and so we didn't release them. In hindsight though, we should have communicated what was going on to you - our clients - and for that I am extremely sorry. I can only say that - when you're under attack from all sides, you sometimes feel like you have no choice but to hunker down and try and dig your way out of the situation.

However, throughout this time we have also continued to develop the Stunt Guy universe and, it's fair to say that the plans have developed somewhat. We now have a much clearer picture of what we're creating here and where it should go next.

Now that we've finished the last of our major projects (the really big one got released today but it would be crass to promote it here) the Stunt Guy project is firmly back on the radar and (I hope you'll be pleased to know) it's going to be bigger and better than ever. The plans however are going to change a little - but I hope you'll agree that was always going to be the case right?!

Anyway - I'll be in touch shortly with more information but, in the meantime, let me confirm a few details:

1) For the time being BFL has been taken off the App store just in case anyone buys in without realising what they are getting themselves into.

2) Since it's been so long we think it's only fair to give the rest of you - our backers - a chance to decide what *you* want to happen next - this time it's not a vote - it'll be your personal choice.

3) We'll give you a series of options of what to do with your investment these are likely to include:

  • Receiving a refund for your investment + 50% interest

  • Migrating your investment into the re-vamped project.

  • Donating you investment + 100% interest to a charity of your choice.

However in addition - to say thanks for your belief in the project thus far there will be an additional gift for every backer (regardless of investment) which is likely to be a limited edition Stunt Guy comic and sought-after glow in the dark skulls tee-shirt.

So... there you go. I hope that sounds good to you? Sorry again and personally I'm really looking forward to getting back to it!

Kart Fighter 3 - Coming Soon to an iPhone near you!

The time is nigh... after nearly 12 months slog the latest instalment in the Kart Fighter saga is almost with us. Last night Apple approved the submission build for Kart Fighter 3 - Unbeaten Tracks which means there's no going back now! For good or for bad (it'll be good, honest!) the epic follow-up to Kart Fighter World tour will be launching on the 18th July (Thurs Next week).

The team have worked themselves to near exhaustion on this one but, based on the reactions of the testers, it was definitely worth it. So... tune in to the app-store next week and in the meantime you can enjoy the awesome trailer!



Oh... and for those of you who don't speak Apple - it'll be on android and a bunch of different other platforms in due course.

Ladies and Gentlemen - a new era has arrived... and it's the 19th century!

Today we launch part one of what might well be the world's slowest rebrand. We've been working on it for nearly a year already and, frankly (unless we can find a good front-end developer) we might well still be working on it in another 12 months! But... part one is done... Phew.

Thus far our rebrand consists of:
  • A logo
  • An image
  • And an under construction page.
All are fricking amazing though and huge props to Kit, Al, Fryer and Ben for their sterling work on it.


However we also have a secret weapon... courtesy of Mr Richard Oram who finished off the identity work and prep'd it for print and the wonderful people at Solways, one of England's finest printers. We have what is purported to be the world's most awesome business card.

After the print work was finished Tim was so excited that he sent me a lovely email
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhh – stunning results - Great design, print and paper working together.... The best ever."

Red Bull Games Get A New Home


We all know Red Bull as purveyors of fine energy beverages, owners of an all-conquering F1 team and sponsors of every daredevil/head-case that ever revved a motor bike or fell to Earth from space. Followers of Kempt will also know that Red Bull are hugely into games and have a pretty tasty back catalogue of their own (we've made four of 'em).

Now, with a little help from Kempt, they've brought all their titles together in the Red Bull Games portal, a home to their exclusive content and a destination for gamers across the world.

Built by Kempt (with the sterling assistance of ace freelance talent Paul Davis and Tom Gillett) the site isn't just a games list but features the kind of gamification that really works - possibly because it's on a games site.

The portal is a well-spoken global beast, localised for over 25 territories and 5 languages. It also has an idea what you want, serving platform-specific content in layouts to suit desktop PCs, mobiles and tablets.

Announcing "Ultimate Networking"

Kempt are organising a super wicked Go Kart endurance race at the end of April, for digital agencies in Kent.
We’re asking for submissions of teams of 2 - 4 people to take part in the 90 minute race, to finally answer the question: who is Canterbury’s Ultimate Networker? The winner will also take home the prize of the Ultimate Networking Trophy:

Of course, the emphasis isn’t really on “networking” here, more on having fun, inhaling a lot of 4stroke fumes and realising our inner competitive streak is no way near as good as we thought it really was.


Why should i attend this ludicrous event?

Because it’s going to be a lot of fun. And hopefully your boss is going to pay for you to attend. If they don’t then simply invite them along, make sure they beat all the other agencies and then ask for a promotion.
